Bedford is located on the northwestern end of the Bedford Basin, an extension of Halifax Harbour. It is often referred to as a “bedroom” community since many of its residents live in the community and work in other areas. CONTINUED...One of the main arteries connecting Halifax to Bedford. In the older part of Bedford, houses are primarily single family, older style houses, many of them built on the steep hills rising from the Bedford Highway. In more recent years, new developments have been built consisting of single family homes, duplexes, townhouses, condos and apartments. In addition, the infrastructure to support the growth including roads, schools, recreational facilities, business parks and shopping. There are many different and distinct neighbourhoods in Bedford including Shore Drive area on the shores of the Bedford Basin, Eaglewood, Basinview Estates, Bedford West, the Ravines to name a few. Each of these neighbourhoods as well as the many others in the area are unique in their own right. Some consist of older well-established communities while others are growing and changing over time. Bedford has its own sense of community despite its recent growth and expansion. It continues to host and support its own festivals, parades, fireworks and sense of community through its many sports and cultural events.
