We're Canadians Eh?

As Canadians, we know what winters can be like. Now that winter is upon us it's a good idea to be prepared for Nova Scotia's unpredictable weather. Most of these tips can be used for any storm, whether it is winter or any other season.

Were you here for White Juan? I remember it very well and, I also remember not being prepared for it. I will certainly never forget the amount of snow we received during that storm! We haven't had a storm quite like that in a while but we need to stay vigilant especially during these unprecedented times we are living in. It's time to take stock of what you have to be prepared for in a storm. Do you have everything you need?

We've created a helpful guide to preparing your home and family…

I’ll start this off with what every blog starts with in 2020……. Things are a little different this year but don’t let that get you down…. Or, in these unprecedented times….. you know, all that stuff!

Here’s the thing. It’s true. But it’s almost as if I’m used to it now; operative word being “almost”. I don't know about you, but I'm just going to go with the flow and PIVOT (insert Ross’ voice from Friends) from our norm. Here are some ideas to do with the kiddo’s in the days leading up to the big fat man’s appearance.

 1. Holiday Light Adventure!

On the first day of Christmas, I gave my kids a lift around the city. This should be a tradition in every household COVID or no COVID. Get out and see those lights! Every year the kids say…

This year, Mother's Day might look a little different for everyone. But don't let that get you down! Whether you celebrate your mother, grandma, aunt, sister or another special mother figure in your life, we have come up with lots of ways to help you make her feel special even at a distance.

 1. Gratitude Video

Ask each of your siblings/children to share their favourite memory on camera and create a video montage. Throw in some favourite pictures of you all together and some great ones of her alone, mix that with a great song and you have the perfect present for her to keep forever.

2. At Home Wine Tasting

This may not be the same as sending her to a beautiful vineyard somewhere in the province, but it's as close as we…

Lawrence Town Beach, March 25, 2020

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean that everyone needs to go bonkers! The thought of having to spend every waking hour with my beloved children has me a little overwhelmed. I know I am not alone here! Something we will all take away from this global crisis is that teachers of children for every age do not make enough money, nor do they get enough appreciation. I am working from home during this, so my children need to have some sort of structure for the hours that I am working. We have a schedule set up that is in no way set in stone, but it gives my kids some direction where they need it. I set up alarms on my middle son’s cell phone with each of the alarms named with what type of activity to do next. We all sat together and came up with things to…

So let’s get real… how are you? Are you doing ok with social distancing? Are you going out of your mind with boredom yet? Well, I have some good news for you! Spring has arrived today and we now have something positive to brighten our days, literally! Days are staying brighter for longer and the temps are slowly rising. Do you know what that means? It’s SPRING CLEANING time! There’s nothing that makes me feel happiness at home like a clean and organized house. That fresh feeling I get from clearing out all the unwanted energy and stale air from the winter is just so satisfying. I mean don’t get me wrong, I like winter (no I do not) but there is just something about the earth being re-born after freezing for so long that really gets me in the feels.

March Break. It is what it is …. a break! A week for our kids (and their ahh-maa-zing teachers) to have a well-deserved break from all the learning (teaching) they have been doing. A time to refuel, a time to leave the go-go-go mentality behind. This year, as the same as most years, we will be staying home in good ol’ Nova Scotia! Mainly because I would prefer my kids get some sort of gastro bug in the comfort of our home rather than in a tropical environment where it might take 10 minutes to get back to our room to use the bathroom!

This year, I’ve put a lot of thought into what a great March break would look like for my family and I’ve come up with a fun-filled week that I hope you might be able to take advantage of as well! We aren’t going too…

Nova Scotia's Heritage Day – 2020 – Africville

The third Monday of February each year brings us our Provincial Heritage Day. This day is our annual reminder to bring people together to honour the remarkable people, events and places in Nova Scotia’s History. This year’s Heritage Day recognizes Africville. This day also happens to fall on the 10th Anniversary of the apology to Africville. Africville holds great significance to our African Nova Scotian Community.

This day will bring light to the tragic story of displacement of and discrimination against the people of Africville. It will also bring light to the incredible sense of community, pride and heritage that the former residents of Africville still share to this day.  This pride and…

Colour of the Year – Classic Blue

Pantone Colour Institute’s Colour of the Year is out and it oozes sophistication and power. “Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” This colour emerges as a colour of stability. In a world with so much uncertainty, this colour will provide us with a sense of calmness we all need.

Classic Blue is the colour of the year and I want to put it everywhere, including my wardrobe. This blue is so versatile you could use it in any space in your home; from your bathroom to the kitchen, it all depends on you!

Let’s bring it back to the basics of colour with the…

We must remember.

For many of us, war is something that we see in history books, newspapers, or on a television screen. Many of us now were born during a time of peace and only see war happening in distant parts of the world. We can often take for granted the freedom that we are afforded each and every day. Remembrance Day is a time to remember the courage and sacrifices our military forces made for us. Not only the men and women who fought in the wars, but their families who lost their loved ones because they willingly chose to fight to preserve our peace and make the world a better place.

This Remembrance Day, we gather to honour our Veterans and pay tribute to the brave men and women, who over many years, have answered the call to serve.
