Father's Day 2020 - Supporting Local

Posted by Lyndsay Hart on Thursday, June 11th, 2020 at 10:17am.

A Father’s love is boundless. He is your loudest cheerleader and your biggest fan. He is your son’s first hero and your daughter’s first love. Whether he is giving you his best advice or telling you a corny dad joke, he is always there for you. With Father’s Day right around the corner, we have come up with some great ideas to help you show him how much you care.

Things are starting to open up a bit and some restrictions are being lifted.  Supporting local is great for both dad and our economy. Here are some great gift ideas from places right here in Nova Scotia.

Selby's Bunker

Selby's Bunker is a coffee and gift shop located in Dartmouth in the Cole Harbour area. There are lots of little gifts for dad in there including cool socks, punny beer mugs, and oven mits to help him not burn his hands when taking things off the BBQ; my husband constantly tries to take food wrapped in tinfoil off the BBQ and forgets that he isn't really Superman! Make sure you check out their website before heading over as their hours have been modified for the time being.

Rudi's Hot Sauce

If you have ever been to The Halifax Farmer's Seaport Market, you definitely know this delicious hot sauce! Right now, Rudi's is having promotion for Father's Day where you can choose any seven bottles of hot sauce for $50 and pick it up from his "burn box" outside of his home on Herring Cove Road. That's a smokin' deal! If the dad figure in your life is anything like my husband, they love hot sauce!

*There are SO many places you could grab something for dad at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market via curbside pickup. Visit their website for a list of all the local vendors*

Prescott Group

The Prescott Group is a local non-profit organization who supports over 160 adults living in Halifax with intellectual disabilities through development of life and work skills. For Father's Day they have a special going on to help support their programs. For $15 you can get all this! Please visit their website for the order form.

Cyclesmith

Did everyone else start biking more during this quarantine or was it just our family? How about a new bike for Dad for Father's Day! Cyclesmith's founder and owner, Greg Smith started his craft in 1986, building custom frames for bike lovers alike. It later developed into the energy efficient showroom now located on Agricola Street in Downtown Halifax. Purchasing a bike for Dad this year is a great idea to help keep him fit! Visit Cyclesmith's website for their current hours of operation and set up an appointment to have the dad figure in your life professionally fitted for an awesome bike!

The Floatation Centre

Have you heard of this yet? If not, let me tell you a bit about it. A floatation tank is a dark, soundproof tank filled with a foot or less of salt water. The benefits of floating are endless! Studies suggest that time in a floatation tank can help with better sleep, muscle relaxation, decreased stress and anxiety and decrease in body pain. The water is body temperature and is filled with epsom salts to make you buoyant.

Dads need relaxation too! Us moms can't keep that all to ourselves ;P. A float is a perfect gift of relaxation and something probably something that he has never done before.

The Millstone Public House

This place. I had never even heard of if before and I'm ashamed to admit it. The are 100% local and I love them! A few days before Mother's Day, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw an advertisement for a take out Mother's Day dinner for two and it came with a bottle of wine for $50. WELL! Let me tell you, I have never had such good pasta in my life! The portions were great and they were a pleasure to deal with. We had the Cajun Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo and it was divine. They are open now for dine in but if you are still not comfortable going out just yet, they still have take out with contactless curbside pickup available! Order your dad some dinner so he doesn't have to BBQ!

Getaway Farmers and Butchers

Get all of your meat for your dad's BBQ this year from a local farm. They have a location in the Hydrostone which is super convenient. They are also at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market six days a week (when it re-opens). Getaway raises their beef on an exclusively grass fed diet, which means that the cattle are on pasture in the summer and a healthy mix of hay and silage through the winter. Visit their website for more information.

Independent Mercantile Company

Is the dad figure in your life a beard lover/wearer? This lovely shop is locally owned and is inspired by the owners love of travel and all things beautiful. Stop by the TIMCO (The Independent Mercantile Company) for this locally sourced beard oil and beard balm from Better Beard Co.  This 100% natural beard oil and balm will have your dad's beard shiny and full of moisture (the good kind, not from speaking moistly at someone)!

Compass Distillers

Does your dad like his martini shaken, not stirred (said in my best James Bond voice). If so, visit this distillery! Everything about this distillery is local. Their spirits are made from scratch and crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Treat dad to some fantastic tasting spirits and bitters or better yet, book a tasting experience he will never forget!

Watershed Wood Designs

If you're looking for something local, hand crafted and totally unique, look no further. Watershed Wood Designs makes custom wood works that are gorgeous. A set of hand crafted laser etched coasters would be a perfect addition to your dad's man cave!

Rousseau Chocolatier

Our list would not be complete without a little bit of chocolate! Everyone loves chocolate and we happen to have one of the best chocolatiers right next to our office! They also make the best French Macaron you will ever taste outside of France itself! For those who have a dad with a sweet tooth, Rousseau's is the perfect place to help curb that sweet tooth!

For all the golf loving dads out there, don't forget to get him a round of golf from one of the many award winning courses in Nova Scotia. I'm sure he has some catching up to do! Here are a few great spots around HRM:

  1. Ashburn Golf Club
  2. The Links at Brunello
  3. Glen Arbour Golf

You can find the complete list of Golf Courses right here on our website. It's under our lifestyle section.

I hope you are able to find something local this year for Father's Day with the help of this list! There are so many locally owned stores and they need our help now more than ever. Remember, Amazon doesn't help sponsor your child's hockey team, your child's dance competitions or their schools!
