On July 6, 2023 the Halifax Commons Pool finally opened and it’s been packed with swimmers ever since! The pool is open every day with specific swim times for lane swimming and open swims, completely free of charge.
Before heading to the pool, you'll need to check the swim times online. There are multiple Open Swim/Lane swimming times throughout each day. At the end of each swim time, swimmers are asked to exit the pool so that the next lineup of swimmers can enter. I think this is a great system to allow for everyone to get a turn in the pool!
Plan to arrive 15-25 minutes before the swim begins to secure a spot in line. There were two times that I’d arrived too late (5 minutes until the swim time) and they'd already reached max capacity, so I wasn't able to get in for that swim time. The amount of time before the swim you should arrive depends on how busy the pool is that day - for example, you'd need to arrive earlier on a sunny Saturday than a cloudy Tuesday morning.
The facility has universal change rooms with individual and family cubicles, and lockers are available to store your things - just make sure to bring your own lock.
The pool itself is honestly awesome! The max capacity that is put in place for each swim time ensures it's not too crowded, from pool noodles to life jackets to an aquatic wheelchair, there’s plenty of equipment available for use (you can also bring your own floaties!), and the pool has some really fun features like a splash pad and aquatic climbing climbing walls! There are also plenty of lifeguards surrounding the pool which makes me feel really safe.
Overall, I think the Halifax Commons Pool is a great new facility for the community! It's a great spot for anybody to cool off, have some fun, get some exercise and enjoy the summer sun!
