Dartmouth is home to both Business and Retail parks that are an important part of the city’s infrastructure. Burnside Industrial Park, established in the early 1970’s, houses a wide range of industrial, manufacturing, electronics and transportation businesses. Dartmouth Crossing is a large shopping area in Dartmouth home to big box stores such as COSTCO, Walmart and IKEA. In addition, pedestrian malls house lots of other retail stores and restaurants.
Dartmouth was originally built up from the Halifax Harbour as a sawmill and agricultural outpost of Halifax. Today, the city continues to have a vibrant downtown just steps from the waterfront complete with local businesses, restaurants, coffee shops, Community College campus and a weekend Farmers market. In recent years, the city has seen a resurgence of growth along the Dartmouth waterfront with developments such as Kings Wharf, a large Condominium development on the Dartmouth waterfront.Over time, Dartmouth has grown and spread out creating neighbourhoods and communities with their own recreation facilities, schools, local businesses and restaurants. Some of the neighbourhoods that have developed and continue to develop include Colby Village, Eastern Passage, Woodlawn, Portland Hills to name a few. Housing in these areas are a mix of single-family, semi-detached, townhouses, condos and apartment buildings. Many of the developments have been built on the shores of many of the lakes that Dartmouth is known for.
