Timberlea area is the fastest growing community in the Province of Nova Scotia. Timberlea, meaning "a broad meadow in a forest", was first known as Nine Mile River which fed several early mills. Renamed Timberlea in 1922, it reflected the importance of the forest and lumbering industry. It is situated between Lakeside and Hubley and is lovingly apart of the BLT (Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea) group of communities. If one is looking for a real sense of community, this is the place for them.
Local businesses in the area are a key part in keeping this community as close-knit and friendly as ever. There are restaurants, medical facilities, public transportation and several daycare centres in the area. A large grocery chain has plans to move in over the next few years as well as a brand new community centre that will be built in the next 5-10 years. Big things are happening here. The schools in this area are said to be some of the best in the HRM.
Timberlea is also home to the BLT Rails to Trails, an old railroad track was converted to a trail spanning from the nearby Beechville all the way to Hubley (13kms) in 2007. You can also take this trail to Cranberry Lake which is a popular swimming spot for the locals. The BLT Trail then connects to a similar trail with another 32 kilometre stretch toward Upper Tantallon and beyond. The BLT Rails to Trails also connects to the Bluff Trail, a 30 kilometre network of non-motorized wilderness trails. So many trails to be explored! If you love the outdoors, this is the place for you.
