Spryfield History

Prior to the mid 18th Century, the area we now know as Spryfield was populated by the Mi’Kmaq people, who hunted and fished Beaver Lake - which is now known as Long Lake.

In 1769 Captain Lieutenant-General William Spry purchased the land in the area to plant food for the Halifax Garrison. The area came to be known as Spry's fields until it eventually evolved into Spryfield. The land in the area was ideal for farming, making it very enticing to European settlers along with its proximity to the Halifax market.

In the 1950s, a large development began to take shape on the southernmost tip of the subdivision, which would become Leiblin Park. The park was developed by William J. Olie after his wife, Elizabeth Kidston, inherited the land and named after Henry Leiblin, a Halifax baker that owned a farm in the area. The homes on the first crescent in the area, Avon Crescent, sold in 1956 for around $8,000 each. Many of the homes are still intact with ample vacant land still existing.

In 1859 the first public school in Spryfield opened and was taught by Elizabeth Sutherland, who would later be honoured by the opening of Elizabeth Sutherland Memorial School in 1958.

Spryfield eventually amalgamated with the City of Halifax on January 1st, 1969.
