Nova Scotia's Heritage Day – 2020 – Africville
The third Monday of February each year brings us our Provincial Heritage Day. This day is our annual reminder to bring people together to honour the remarkable people, events and places in Nova Scotia’s History. This year’s Heritage Day recognizes Africville. This day also happens to fall on the 10th Anniversary of the apology to Africville. Africville holds great significance to our African Nova Scotian Community.
This day will bring light to the tragic story of displacement of and discrimination against the people of Africville. It will also bring light to the incredible sense of community, pride and heritage that the former residents of Africville still share to this day. This pride and heritage is something to celebrate and remember. You can learn more about this tragic story here or here.
In 2004, the United Nations declared the treatment and destruction of Africville a crime against humanity. Six years later, as a part of the apology to the former residents of Africville (2010), there was a settlement provided from all three levels of government. Part of the settlement was used to rebuild a replica of the Seaview Church which now stands as the Africville Museum.
If you are fortunate enough to have the day off, you should take some time to visit the museum in Africville. The museum will be holding events on the morning of February 17, 2020:
- 10:00am – “Sliding Through Africville” event in the Africville Park
- 11:00am – Special dedication and announcement at the Africville Museum
* There will also be a special ceremony honouring Africville at the Halifax International Airport at 2:00pm.
There are several additional ways to celebrate the heritage of Africville. Such as spending time with your family and friends throughout HRM. After the events are finished at the Africville Museum, you could head out all over the city for some fun family friendly events.
