This year, Mother's Day might look a little different for everyone. But don't let that get you down! Whether you celebrate your mother, grandma, aunt, sister or another special mother figure in your life, we have come up with lots of ways to help you make her feel special even at a distance.

 1. Gratitude Video

Ask each of your siblings/children to share their favourite memory on camera and create a video montage. Throw in some favourite pictures of you all together and some great ones of her alone, mix that with a great song and you have the perfect present for her to keep forever.

2. At Home Wine Tasting

This may not be the same as sending her to a beautiful vineyard somewhere in the province, but it's as close as we are going to get this year! If weather permits, set up your backyard with flowers and tables and set the perfect scene. Have each section set up as a different country where you know she would love to be. Buy a selection of wine from each country and find some cheese or hors d'oeuvres to pair with it and, voila! You have the perfect at home wine tasting that she will be sure to never forget! This can be done virtually as well! Just buy the same wines and taste them together in your own backyard!

3. Fancy Dinner Party

Do you have small kids at home? Have them create a fancy dinner invitation and have them deliver it to her first thing in morning (along with the amazing gift you all got for her). Let them pick out her dress for the evening and pick out the menu as well. Make sure it is something that she loves to eat! Have the kids cook her dinner (with your help of course) and try dressing them up as a little Maitre D' and waiter so they can serve the food to her too! As a side note, this can be done even if you don't have small kids at home with you. If you don't live with your mom, call up her favourite local restaurant and have them deliver the fancy dinner to her! Grab your phones or computers and have a virtual dinner together. Don't forget to light some candles.

4. Spa Day at Home

Try to make the best of the situation we are all in at the moment! Prepare an afternoon of relaxation. Start with a mani/pedi that she is probably in desperate need of right now (we are in week 7 now... I think?). Make a homemade face mask to have on her face while you do the presoak for her feet. You can find a few great recipes here. You can also order them from your local spa. Lots of spas are doing take home kits right now. Draw a warm bath with her favourite bath bomb and leave her alone! Don't forget the cucumber slices for her eyes!

5. Host a Tea Party

Who doesn't love a good cup of tea!? What's even better? A tea party with the prettiest little tea cups and saucers. Bake something sweet, make triangle sandwiches to go with and toast to your mom. If you're not into baking, or are just simply terrible at it like me, order something locally to help curb your sweet tooth. Not everyone has tea cups and saucers, so if you don't, ask around to some of your friends and family that live within walking distance to see if you can borrow some for the day (keeping in mind the social distancing we must abide by). You can do this virtually as well! The wonders of technology are endless.

6. Host a Virtual Brunch Party

Get in touch with all your siblings, family and her favourite friends to have a virtual brunch. Each person will have to make their own brunch but you can have it delivered to your mom so she doesn't have to cook. Create a collage of pictures of your mom and you all together to use as your background (this is something you can do in Zoom if you use it). If you don't use zoom, have them all make little signs to show her while on the video call.

7. Picnic Time

Plan a picnic in your backyard, balcony, patio or even on your living room floor. Have all her favourite finger foods and make sure she doesn't have to do any of the work. That includes clean up! If you have little ones, get them to bring their favourite stuffed animals to the picnic as well. The more the merrier. This is one you can do virtually as well.

There are so many ways to show her that you love her and these are just a few ideas. There are always the tried and true flower arrangements and homemade gifts of poems, crafts made by little hands and a lovely card to make her tear up. Those are always my faves. A lot of us moms love to shop as well. Try to give her some time to herself to pop on to her favourite online store and pick something that she really wants.

Let her relax and don't have her make any decisions. The main thing that us moms really want for a day is for someone to just "take care of it"; but gifts and grand gestures (like the ones above) sure make it a little bit better.

Stay safe out there and be well!
